Unworthy but chosen

Matthew 3

13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him.14 John would have prevented him, saying, I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?15 But Jesus answered him, Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness. Then he consented.

Ever felt unworthy to be used by God?  Join a long and illustrious queue.  John knew who Jesus was and felt that the act of him baptising Jesus was a reversal of how things should be.  Nevertheless, he did it – because Jesus asked him to.  There are two common responses in the Bible when God announces His plans to people: “Who, me? I’m not good enough” (e.g. John the Baptist, Isaiah, Moses, Gideon, Saul) or “Yeah right, like that would happen…”, thus showing by unbelief that they were not worthy (e.g. Sarah, Zechariah).

The amazing thing is that God fulfilled His purpose through these imperfect people anyway.  Whether you or I feel that we’re worthy to do what God has asked us to is irrelevant.  Which of us really is worthy anyway?  What matters is to obey, regardless.  If He has asked us to do it, He knows that we can.  So don’t limit His work through you by how you see yourself.  Just do it.
