Don’t know what you’ve got…

..’til it’s gone, as the song goes.  I can agree with that, after a computer problem at home this week left me with a corrupted finance spreadsheet and half my music files missing. (Mostly fixed now, you’ll be glad to hear.)

Parts of the first few chapters of Genesis sadden me when I see what man threw away.   I was thinking of this reading Genesis 11 today.  Everyone spoke the same language but they lost it all by trying to make a name for themselves instead of God.  Just 8 chapters previously the greatest tragedy in human history occurs.  Adam and Eve had almost everything – everything except the things God knew would destroy them – but that wasn’t enough. They disobeyed God, tried to get more, and lost everything.  Imagine what the world would be like if they had resisted the serpent (Perelandra, the second book of C. S. Lewis’ Space Trilogy, does this well).

How much do we miss out on by choosing our way instead of God’s?  Lord, help me to live with the acceptance that your way is always the best.

And yet God is still gracious to us and blesses those who obey Him – I’ve just started reading about Abraham.
