Luke 14:11 For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.

A very simple message: don’t claw my way to the top of the pile, but rather let You pull me up.  I’m to let You honour me, having claimed no honour for myself.  I’m not to seek or grab any special treatment but to wait until it is given to me – to wait until my humility is noticed.

This goes completely against the way of this world.  To get ahead I’m meant to seek opportunities to advance myself, to self-promote, to grasp at things out of my reach.  To take a ‘lesser’ role seems like madness.  I’ve never heard anyone in the workplace say, “A promotion? No thanks, you should give it to my colleague”.   Church can be just as bad – I could choose a role I think I should be filling and then try to convince everyone I’m the man for the job.  Your way, though,  is for me to humble myself, to always chose the lowest place and to be satisfied with my position.  If that means I never achieve any prominence, status or wealth in this world, so be it.  If others push themselves forward ahead of me, that’s fine – their reward is here and now.

I’d much rather hear You say to me: “Friend, move up higher”.  I will wait for Your invitation.
