1 Samuel 16:7 But the Lord said to Samuel, Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.

So much of the world today is about outward appearance.  As long as I look like I’m strong, confident, succesful, people will think that I am.  All the time I could be the complete opposite behind the scenes.  Why else would people saddle themselves with crippling debt to drive a car bigger than they need or buy a house so expensive it leaves them unable to pay their bills?  It’s no different, if not worse, within the Church.  It’s easy to put on a good show: raising hands at the right time, quoting Scripture at every opportunity, always trying to sound ‘religious’ in speech, being involved in every available ministry, even being overtly humble.  It can be used to cover up a life that’s falling apart and a heart that’s far from You.

At the heart of it all is where I get my affirmation from.  If it’s from man I shape my appearance, behaviour and words to match what I think man approves of.  I try to project the things that will win me friends.  If I get my affirmation from You I don’t care what people think.  I live a life free from the constraints of public opinion and worldly wisdom.  I live to impress no-one but You and, in doing so, I show Your love and draw people to You rather than me.

Lord, You know what’s inside me.  You know how far from perfect I am and how I wish it were different.  Help me to live only for Your approval.

  2. Amen. I agree with you. Most time we use our mind for spiritual things, not listen to God who speaks to us through his spirit in us. Even if someone is speaking or say something we discern the spirit if its of truth.
