Faith in…?

Filed under: Uncategorized — andykiff @ 9:28 pm

2 Samuel 24:10 But David’s heart struck him after he had numbered the people. And David said to the Lord, I have sinned greatly in what I have done. But now, O Lord, please take away the iniquity of your servant, for I have done very foolishly.

This chapter confused me the first few times I read it.  What I see in it now, whether it’s what the passage is really saying, is that David took a census to give him some idea of ‘his’ strength.  He counted the fighting men to know how well defended Israel was.  The reality, which he quickly realised, was that Israel stood or fell on Your protection, not by the might of her armies.  David was trusting in numbers rather than You.

It’s so easy to put faith in You when that’s all I have.  When I’m in a hole and can’t see any way out I have no option but to trust in You.  How easy though, when I feel like my life is all working out right, to spend my time dwelling on what I have.  I count my money and possessions and feel secure, forgetting that everything I have is by Your grace and that You will provide everything I need.  Lord help me to live in a state of thankfulness, whether I have plenty or little.  Help me to trust in You, the giver, rather than Your amazing and undeserved gifts.
