Mark 6:34 When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And he began to teach them many things.

1. A deep awareness of and sympathy for another’s suffering;

2. The humane quality of understanding the suffering of others and wanting to do something about it.

Many great acts have been done in the name of compassion when the Church rises up to meet the needs around her. Somehow, thwar days, the word only seems to be used in the context of physical suffering and need.  Jesus healed people and, as on this occasion, he fed them.  His compassion didn’t cause him first to do these things this time.  He felt their spiritual hunger and lack of direction and this compassion drove him to teach.

Lord help me to feel the needs I walk straight past every day, whatever sort of needs those may be.  Let me be driven by compassion.
