Tough love

Filed under: Uncategorized — andykiff @ 8:03 am

Mark 10:21 And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.

Telling a rich man to give everything to the poor may seem like a harsh punishment for him and a good day for the recipients.  The transfer of wealth appears as a great idea to those on the receiving end.  I’m sure any formerly wealthy person in a Communist state would be less enthusiastic about the idea.

As usual, Jesus turns worldly wisdom on its head.  He told the man to give away his possessions because He loved him, not to punish him or to benefit the poor.  He knew that for this rich man, his possessions were really possessing him.  In love He tried to set the man free from the one thing holding him back from truly finding fullness of life in You.  How sad that the man couldn’t take that step.

Lord, hard as it may be, show me those possessions, behaviours or ambitions that I need to give up so that I can receive infinitely more from You.
