Self control

1 Corinthians 9:25 Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable.

An athlete can be diligent about their training but neglect other things.  The one who trains hard but eats junk, drinks too much, doesn’t rest and has their mind on other things isn’t likely to win.  In the same way, I’m not preparing and running my spiritual race well just by reading the Bible and praying.  These are essential parts of the training plan but so are diligently doing the things that prepare my mind, heart and body for action.  As Paul, says, it’s about self-control in all things.  How easy it is to lose or surrender control for temporary gain whilst missing out in the long run.

Lord help me to maintain self-control in everything.  When I am weak, remind me that You are my strength against all temptation.  Help me to run this race to the absolute maximum of my ability.
