The doctor

Luke 5:31 And Jesus answered them, Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.32 I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.

Luke could understand these words of Jesus with his own professional insight.  A doctor serves no purpose for people who are well.  A doctor also can do nothing for those who are sick but refuse to admit it.  When Jesus said that He didn’t come to call the righteous He was referring to the self-righteous, as no-one is right unless You’ve declared them so.  He was talking about the people who were so caught up in their carefully constructed self-image that they would refuse to admit they had need of a Saviour.  By insisting they weren’t ill they made themselves unable to receive the treatment that could actually have cured them.  The appearance of righteousness was more important than the real thing.

Lord, strip away the pride that would hold me back from falling at Your feet.  I am sick and only You can cure me.  Give me a low tolerance for sin and a strong desire for the treatment.
