Built on action

Luke 6:47 Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like:48 he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.

This is such a well-known parable that it always makes me smile when I see people stupid enough to pitch their tents on the beach in summer.  The comparison between building on rock and sand is designed to be such a difference that it’s clear which is the right thing to do.  Building on the sand would be an idiot’s plan.  It’s easy to sit back and wisely nod that the wise man built his house upon the rock and miss what this actually entails.  The house built on the rock doesn’t represent someone who simply trusts in You but someone who hears Your word and then acts.  The idiot isn’t the one who doesn’t listen – it’s the one who hears but does nothing about it.  A strong foundation is laid through action.

Lord, so often I let my desire for knowledge override my urge to act.  Help me to absorb no more than I can put into action.  Reduce the time it takes for Your words to reach my hands and feet.
