Luke 15:20 And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him.

This son had as good as declared his father dead to him by demanding his inheritance.  He then went and treated what his father gave him with utter contempt, wasting it all.  He eventually decided to return through hunger as much as any desire to go back home.  He deserved a frosty welcome at best.

The father ran.

No cold shoulder, no stern lecture, no ground rules, no rehabilitation programme.  He abandoned all dignity, pride and rights and sprinted to embrace.  He went beyond the bounds of rational, normal behaviour and kissed the one who’d so utterly rejected him.  He showed nothing but love.

It’s unfair, it’s inexplicable, it’s certainly not how I’d do it.  But I thank You every day for Your amazing grace.
