Beyond difference

John 4:20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.21 Jesus said to her, Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father.

Jesus had broken some major cultural and religious taboos by speaking to a Samaritan woman.  The woman, whilst surprised, was happy to talk to Jesus.  She was happy to talk to Him right up to the point where He called out her sin.  She tried to deflect the uncomfortable focus away from her own life and onto a matter of religious difference between Jews and Samaritans.  Jesus was having none of that – He immediately made it a point of no concern.  He didn’t argue for the side of the Jews or make any concessions to the Samaritans.  Instead, He looked to the day when it wouldn’t matter.  He declared it an issue of no eternal significance.

Lord help me to see beyond my own little world, my own preferences and prejudices.  May I stand for truth and pass over unimportant differences.
