Honour now

Luke 20:46 “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love greetings in the marketplaces and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts,47 who devour widows’ houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”

Some verses are painful to read – in a good way.  I’m pretty sure I don’t devour widows’ houses and I’m not great at long, fancy prayers.  My robes aren’t any longer than anyone else’s.  I am guilty though of wanting to be on the inside, in the know, privileged, favoured, honoured.  I don’t like feeling that I’m a nobody.  That’s a dangerous thing as it can lead to seeking power and position for what they bring rather than what I can give.  If I do anything out of a desire less than serving other people I’m in the wrong place.  I need to constantly check my motivation for any task or role I undertake.  It has to help others in some way – if I then get any earthly honour or reward it’s an added bonus to the honour I’m storing up in the future.

Lord help me to keep my eyes on You – let Your love be my motivation and my reward.
