Casting off the baggage

Acts 15:10 Now, therefore, why are you putting God to the test by placing a yoke on the neck of the disciples that neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear?11 But we believe that we will be saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, just as they will.”

I like Peter’s thoughts here.  He calls the Pharisees out for what they were really doing.  They weren’t just heaping unnecessary rules on converts, they were putting You to the test.  They were trying to say that Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross wasn’t enough.  Peter points out that not only are these regulations unnecessary in the light of the cross, they’re also something that the Pharisees themselves couldn’t keep up with.  That’s something for me to bear in my mind when trying to put standards onto other people that I can’t live up to myself.

I like how he turns the focus back onto the religious Jews in verse 11.  He almost states it as a given that these new Gentile disciples will be saved by grace but has to state it as a step of faith for the people with a religious background.  They had the biggest hurdle to get over – the idea that a lifetime of following the rules wouldn’t save them.  It’s a lot easier to accept grace if you can accept that you’ll never be good enough to save yourself.

Thank You Lord that you keep stripping away the layers of religion that I build up.  Help me to be helpless.
