No bitterness

Genesis 45:5 And now do not be distressed or angry with yourselves because you sold me here, for God sent me before you to preserve life…7 And God sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant on earth, and to keep alive for you many survivors.8 So it was not you who sent me here, but God. He has made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house and ruler over all the land of Egypt.

It’s easy to think that Joseph’s behaviour to his brothers was quite normal.  After all, he was in charge of a whole country.  Why would he not welcome them and forgive them for their past actions?  But these men weren’t there to ask forgiveness.  They didn’t even know who Joseph was.  The last time they’d seen him had been when they’d sold him into slavery – hardly the sort of family disagreement that you can laugh about over dinner.  And yet Joseph forgave them, even though they didn’t deserve or ask for it.  He practically thanked them for nearly killing him then selling him and pretending he was dead.

Joseph was able to see that the harm that was intended for him was all part of the process that You’d used to bring him to where he ended up.  He remained in Your will and finished up as second only to Pharoah, not just despite the actions of his brothers but because of them.  He was able to separate their intentions from the results.  That’s the key to avoiding bitterness – knowing that You truly can work anything for good.

Help me Lord to focus on where You’ve brought me to and to be thankful for the path that led me here, particularly where I might have cause to be bitter or resentful.  Your plan is greater than the harm anyone might wish me.
