Not wages

Filed under: Uncategorized — andykiff @ 10:38 pm

Romans 4:4 Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due.

Abraham wasn’t counted as righteous because he kept the ten commandments or observed all the right rituals and festivals – they didn’t exist for him.  He was declared righteous because of his faith.  It was a gift.  With wages, there is an agreement of work to be performed and a payment to be received.  Abraham didn’t have this.  He believed first and was given a gift of righteousness.

I find it difficult to get out of the wages mindset at times.  I expect to have to earn things.  I’ve been conditioned to be suspicious of the idea of a gift with no strings attached.  But if my forgiveness really is a gift then I have to stop trying to earn it.  I could never deserve this through my own actions.  The value is too high for it to be repayment for something I do.

Thank You for Your gift.  Help me to accept it as a gift and not try to earn it.
