Hard lessons

Deuteronomy 8:5 Know then in your heart that, as a man disciplines his son, the Lord your God disciplines you.

The people of Israel learned two lessons the hard way.  Firstly, they doubted Your ability to do what You’d said.  They thought that taking the promised land was beyond them.  They didn’t believe You were willing or able to fight for them – they thought the inhabitants of Canaan were stronger than You.  Secondly, they thought they could succeed without You.  When You’d clearly stated that they were to wander in the wilderness they didn’t repent of their unbelief. Instead they added the sin of self-sufficiency, thinking that they could conquer the land on their own, even though they’d previously decided that it was too difficult with You.

Despite all this, You didn’t punish them. You disciplined them.  Anyone can punish but only someone who cares can discipline.  It’s for the good of the recipient, to bring them back to the right way of acting.  It shows concern for them and  a desire to help them reach the right destination.

Help me Lord when I think I can do it my way or when I doubt Your power.  Lead me back in the right way by whatever means necessary.  I welcome Your discipline as I know it is for my good.
