Nostalgia isn’t what it used to be

Ecclesiastes 7:10  Say not, “Why were the former days better than these?”
For it is not from wisdom that you ask this.

Nothing’s as good as it used to be, is it?  The music’s just noise.  There’s nothing good on TV despite all the channels.  Whatever happened to common decency and manners?  This country’s going to the dogs.  And don’t get me started on the kids…

This isn’t what I think, or at least I hope it isn’t.  But there’s a part of us that looks back with rose-tinted glasses and pines for a mythical past where nothing was bad and life was easy.  It comes out in church as well, with comparisons to the meetings, hymns, preachers and styles of yesterday.  “Why can’t things be like I remember”?  Because they were never actually like I remember.

The past is to be learned from.  The future is to be planned for anticipated.  But the life You’ve given me to live is right now and right here.  The past is gone and won’t ever be coming back.  The future will never arrive.  If I spend my time and my thoughts chasing after either of them I’ll miss what You have planned for me today.

Lord help me to live in the moment, to grab hold of everything You have for me right now.
