Been there, done that

Hebrews 2:18 For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

The worst sort of ‘advisor’ is one who talks from a place of ignorance or inexperience.  The armchair sportsman or manager, the backseat driver, the hardly-ever-present church critic: all talk from how they would hypothetically act in a situation they don’t really know.  The best person to follow is someone who knows what they’re talking about, either from positive or negative experience.  I need to be open to learn from others’ experiences and not dismiss them as not relevant to me.

In Jesus I have the ideal: someone who faced every temptation I’ll ever face and who came through without giving in.  Jesus faced every temptation in submission to You and armed with Your Word.  He modelled the way to succeed.

Lord help me to learn from those who have been before me, to identify how to succeed and how not to fail.  Let me recognise where I can teach others from my own experiences.
