Whatever you’ve got

Mark 7:28 But she answered him, “Yes, Lord; yet even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.”

Sometimes people tell me to expect big, to ask big, to demand big.  In a sense there’s nothing wrong with that – You’re the God of the impossible and You don’t hold back.  It can lead to a sense of entitlement though which I don’t deserve.  The woman in this story came not because she deserved anything.  She approached Jesus because she had a need that he could meet and she wasn’t going to take no for an answer.  She didn’t demand big blessings.  She didn’t ask Jesus to pour out the treasures of heaven.  She responded to his initial block by just asking for whatever he’d got, just the crumbs that fall under the table.

Lord I don’t want to demand the spectacular just because it will demonstrate my great faith.  I just want whatever You have for me.  I know that the merest crumb of provision from You is more than I need.
