Why not me?

Luke 15:2 And the Pharisees and the scribes grumbled, saying, “This man receives sinners and eats with them.”

The Pharisees and scribes spent a lot of time and energy getting offended by Jesus.  They couldn’t leave him alone.  They had to know what he was going to say next or who he was going to say it to.  The company he kept was  a particular sore point to them.  It seems at first like they disapproved of the people he ate with because they weren’t of an ‘acceptable standard’.  But maybe it’s deeper than this.  Jesus didn’t often spend quality time with the religious people.  Maybe they were put out because they thought that the great teacher should be focussing his attention on the ‘holy’ people.

If I see that You favour some people more than me, I have two options: get annoyed at You and the other people because of the unfairness of it all, or find out what it is You want and why You choose to show Yourself more to some people.  Jesus spent time with people who had needs and weren’t afraid to admit it.  He had no time for the people who were more concerned with demonstrating how good they were, how much they’d got life under control.

Lord, I don’t want to put on appearances for You and for other people.  Help me to be real and honest, to admit my failings and my need for You.
