Master and servant

Psalm 123:2 Behold, as the eyes of servants
look to the hand of their master,
as the eyes of a maidservant
to the hand of her mistress,
so our eyes look to the Lord our God,
till he has mercy upon us.

‘Servant’ isn’t a common job description these days.  It doesn’t sit comfortably in modern society.  The idea of devoting my time and effort to meeting the needs and carrying out the orders of another person seems ridiculous.  What about my needs, my goals, my desires?  Who’s going to look out for me if I don’t look out for myself first?  But there’s another side to serving.  The master or mistress not only holds authority but reward.  A good employer meets the needs of their servant.  They are looked to for direction, provision and protection.

You don’t call me to live by the standards of society or think how the world around me thinks.  You want my complete devotion to Your words, to carry out Your commands as I’m instructed.  You demand service.  But You deserve service.  No-one else could have saved me.  No-one else could give me life or purpose.  No-one else protects and provides like You do.  Given the choice between being my own man and looking out for number one, or completely surrendering my desires and plans to someone far greater who loves me beyond my understanding?

I choose You.
