1 Samuel 17:47 Everybody here will see that the Lord doesn’t need swords or spears to save his people. The Lord always wins his battles, and he will help us defeat you.

This was the young David’s confidence.  It wasn’t in his skill with a sling, although he was indeed skilled.  He probably devoted a lot of time in those lonely times as a shepherd to honing his talent.  His confidence was that you would take his ability, small as it seemed in the face of the challenge, and use it for his success and Your glory.  He knew where his help came from.  The maker of heaven and earth.  To the soldiers around he would have seemed completely unequipped but he knew he had all the power he needed.

There’s a healthy tension between trying to be the best I can be at what I’m doing but, at the same time, trusting in You for the outcome.  It’s easiest to balance when I feel least equipped.  I find it easier to trust in You when I have no faith in my own ability.  The challenge is to be skilled yet submissive, prepared yet prayerful, trained yet trusting.  Whatever may come, to be ready but always reliant on You.

Lord help me to take my responsibilities seriously, to sharpen my skills, but to trust completely in Your hand to win the battle.
