Psalm 23:3 He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

Maybe it’s the quiet waters that precede this verse, but I’ve always thought of these words in terms of rest and relaxation.  It conjured up images of a lazy summer day, lying in the grass next to a lake, soaking up the sunshine and generally being at peace.  It goes much deeper than that though.

Restoring means bringing something back to its proper condition.  The proper condition of my soul is to be at one with You.  Your restoration is both a one-time act and an ongoing process.  You lead me in paths of righteousness, meaning it’s a walk rather than staying still.  It’s not a passive thing for either of us.  Restoration takes work.  I’m glad you see something in me worth restoring.
