Matthew 13:34 Jesus always used stories and illustrations like these when speaking to the crowds. In fact, he never spoke to them without using such parables. 35 This fulfilled what God had spoken through the prophet: “I will speak to you in parables. I will explain things hidden since the creation of the world”.

It’s never been about an intellectual exercise.  It’s not spending a lifetime researching in-depth and understanding every punctuation mark in the original Hebrew or Greek.  It’s not about carefully-constructed arguments with appendices of supporting evidence.  None of these things are bad in themselves but they can make it easy to miss the point.

When Jesus spoke, he spoke to everyone – and in ways that everyone could understand.  He told stories, he didn’t lecture from Leviticus as I’m sure the scribes and Pharisees would have done.  He got his message across clearly, simply and in a manner the people could relate to and remember.  He made the Kingdom accessible.  It doesn’t require an entrance exam, just faith and acceptance of Jesus as Lord.

Help me to remember this.  When I’m tempted to get sidetracked on detail, Lord remind me of the main thing – letting other people hear and understand Your good news.
